Handmade Kite: Two RhombsNo.2 by Ralf Maserski

In 1995, after winning a kite at a raffle, Ralf started designing and constructing his first own kites. After becoming German champion in 1997 with a real box kite, he gained international reputation with his FlatBox kite series. By today Ralf has created several well-known kite designs which he frequently presents at workshops and kite festivals in Europe, America, Africa and Asia. The TwoRhombs design is based on the principle of a “nonperiodical tiling”. While a periodical tiling, such as a checkerboard, repeats over and over, the TwoRhombs pattern by Roger Penrose of the University of Oxford consists of two different tiles which do not repeat periodically but to infinity. The TwoRhombs kite presents a short part of this Penrose pattern. Every kite is handmade of spinnaker sail and carbon fiber rods using a glueing and sewing technique.

The kite is 24″ wide and 24″ tall and the organza panel tail is 9'-6″ long.
